Water Polo Mouthguards – Why They Matter

Water polo is fast, physical, and played in close contact — and despite this, mouthguards are not yet mandatory in most leagues. Research shows that around 36% of water-polo players report a concussion, and mouthguards can help reduce impact forces through the jaw, potentially reducing the risk or severity of concussion.

Dental bodies such as the American Dental Association recommend mouthguards for water polo to help prevent:

Chipped or lost teeth

Cuts to the lips, cheeks, and gums

Jaw trauma

Impact force through the jaw to the skull

Yet globally, only around 8% of players currently wear them.
